Building university curricula and capacity in Vietnam

The University of California, Davis, College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, International Programs, has been working on three advanced programs in Vietnam

  1. Hanoi University of Agriculture (HUA-Crop Science - 2006),
  2. Nong Lam University (NLU-Food Technology - 2007) and
  3. Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry (TUAF-Environmental Science and Management-2010).

The objective is to help develop curricula taught in English based on programs at UC Davis.  Staff members from each Vietnamese university have visited UC Davis to audit courses and work with mentors to adopt teaching content and technique.   UC Davis professors have gone to Vietnam to teach and share teaching materials.  At this juncture 28 Vietnamese professors and 17 UC Davis professors have participated.  Approximately 300 students are participating in these programs.  The first graduating class at HUA will be 2011.  In all three programs the first two years are dedicated to English-language training and classes in basic science.

One important aspect of these collaborations is to insure that all three programs are sustainable after the Ministry-sponsored advanced program is completed.  To address this, a program review and evaluation was coordinated by Prof. Emeritus Rost at HUA and NLU in April 2011.
